How long do they take?
Generally, Apprenticeships take between one and four years to complete. However, the exact length can vary and depends on a range of factors, such as your skill level, the qualification being obtained and the industry.
Will I get paid?
All employed apprentices will get a wage. The National Minimum Wage has recently been increased for apprentices. It now stands at £2.60 per hour. However, as the skills of an apprentice develop, many employers tend to increase wages, and you might find yourself earning up to £210 per week.
This minimum wage applies to all 16 to 18 year olds and to those aged 19 and over in the first year of an apprenticeship. If you reach age 19 and have completed the first year of an apprenticeship your employer must pay you at least the full National Minimum Wage for people aged 18 to 20.
Will I need any qualifications?
Ideally you will have GCSEs grades at C and above, although this is not compulsory for some courses. You will also need to attend and interview and pass an initial assessment to be accepted as an apprentice.
What can I do after an apprenticeship?
Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you will be able to show an employer that you have the necessary skills, qualifications and dedication to do the job. With the support of an employer, you could progress on to full or part-time higher education.
Most importantly, an apprenticeship will provide you with an advantage in the job market, as you would have gained valuable experience and qualifications that are relevant to an employer.
Hour of work?
On average, you will work for 30 hours per week, and will spend a day at the college.
How will my progress be monitored?
You will receive support from tutors and assessors at college and in the workplace. This support is on-going and is designed to help you get the most from your apprenticeship.
What happens if I am absent from college or work?
If you are absent from work without prior notice, your employer will need to report this to the college. Equally, if you are absent from college without prior notice we will need to report this to your employer.
