Firstly, rest assured that plans change every day! Whether that be what you choose to buy at the shops, watch on TV, or even eat for dinner. The best part about this is that opportunities are around every corner, waiting for you to grab them with both hands – and that is what clearing is all about.

Clearing is open between July 5th – October 21st 2024.

Now, let’s do some quick fact checking:

What is clearing?

Clearing offers you a chance to find a full-time undergraduate course to start this September. Thousands of students find their university place through clearing every year, so you wouldn’t be alone in exploring your options. It’s not just about if you didn’t get the grades you wanted, it’s about where you feel you want to go, what you want to study, and most importantly – how you feel.

When does clearing open?

Clearing opens from the beginning of July each year. If you have your results, you can apply straight away, however, you might need to wait until A Level/T Level/BTEC or GCSE Results Day in August to be able to apply.

How does clearing work?

At South & City College Birmingham, our website has a list of the courses which have places available to start in the coming September. As soon as you have your results, you can apply for a course that you’re interested in either online (from July until October) or by calling our Clearing helpline which opens on A Level/ T Level/ BTEC Results Day (Thursday 15 August). If you have the required results for the course, or if we think that South & City College Birmingham would be the right fit for you, we will be able to make you an offer!

Why apply in clearing?

There are many reasons why you might want to apply through Clearing:

  • You change your mind about the course you’ve already applied for
  • You change your mind about the place you’ve already applied for
  • Your exam results are better than you expected – this is known as Adjustment
  • You didn’t get the results you were expecting
  • You decided to wait until you’ve received your results before applying to Higher Education

How to be ready for results day:

    1. Research your options: Although Clearing officially starts in early, you can still do a lot of research both before and after to be better prepared on results day. A lot of Higher Education providers often publish their Clearing courses early ~ so there’s no harm in looking ahead of time just to keep your options open.
    2. Explore entry requirements: Most Higher Education providers reveal their entry requirements just before Clearing. Try checking chat forums like The Student Room to get an idea of last year’s qualifications (they could be different in 2023). The good news is, our entry requirements are available to access all year round!
    3. Start looking at options: If you don’t think you will have the results to get on to a degree course, you might want to consider one of our Access courses, commonly known as a foundation degree.
    4. Check out social media: Almost all education providers have a Facebook, Instagram and even TikTok accounts, so make sure you follow those that you’re interested in for up-to-date Clearing news and advice.
    5. Don’t be afraid: Even at this stage, if you’ve changed your mind and no longer want to go to your original choice or insurance choice, then you could still switch. Just be brave! It’s all up to you and where you feel comfortable, you’re never trapped.

What to expect on a clearing call:

One of the biggest worries students often have about results day is wondering what they will be asked on that all-important phone call. It’s really not as scary as it seems!

During the clearing call we’ll ask you a number of things, for example:

  • What’s your name, address, email, and phone number?
  • What is your UCAS and Clearing number? Both of these can be found on your UCAS Hub.
  • What course do you want to study? If you aren’t sure, why not take a look on our website before you call? Or let us know the subject you are interested in and we can help.
  • What results did you get in your A Levels, T Level, BTECs and/or GCSEs? You’ll need to let us know the subjects you studied as well as the grades.
  • Do you have any questions for us? If you have any questions about finances, timetables or want to know a bit more about our facilities, just let us know!

It’s a good idea to make sure you have all the relevant information to hand before you call us so that you feel prepared, but if there’s anything you aren’t sure on, our team are on hand to support.

MYTH BUSTER: You don’t necessarily need a UCAS number to be able to go through clearing!

Clearing is for anyone that wants to find that better fit for them, or for those who want to go down a different path. If you haven’t made an account on UCAS or don’t have a UCAS number you can still give us a call and we can talk you through the next steps. The best thing to do is get in touch either via phone: 0121 694 5000 or by completing our call-back form below.
