Traineeships were brought in by Government in August 2013 to offer young people a way of gaining the necessary skills and experience to gain employment and progress in their career. Traineeships are a work experience programme where young people aged between 16-24 who have little or no job place experience can work with an employer for six weeks to six months. Once a young person has completed a Traineeship with a business, they should be offered an interview for a paid Apprenticeship, a paid role within the business or an exit interview on their time within the business.

Traineeships offer a number of benefits to employers:

  • They can bring in enthusiastic young people with fresh ideas into your business
  • Allow businesses to create skilled workers for the industry
  • Support the local region and economy by helping your business to develop a loyal and talented workforce
  • Staff from your business will have the chance to develop their skills in mentoring and coaching
  • Get first pick of enthusiastic young people who are looking for employment. Effectively a 'try before you buy' system
  • If you decide after the scheme to offer a trainee an Apprenticeship you could be eligible for an Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of £1500
