Since it opened with £1.1m backing from the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), the Skills Academy has supported local people who were out of work into a job or onto further training in readiness for their chosen career path supporting HS2’s construction. The Mayor and Cllr Ian Courts, Chair of the HS2 Regional Enterprise Board, and leader of Solihull Council, welcomed the news that the Skills Academy is gearing up to train more people, ready to transition into 3,000 jobs over the next four years with Balfour Beatty VINCI’s labour supply chain partners.

Construction Gateway Phase 1

Pre-employment construction training

We are currently recruiting trainees for the Balfour Beatty Vinci Skills Academy, which is a construction sector gateway specifically designed to meet the needs of this employer.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for any candidate without prior experience in the construction industry.

About the course

Training will be delivered in a simulated work environment at our Construction centre in Bordesley Green. Candidates will undertake a series of practical and theoretical tasks at the centre to progress them to become ‘site ready’.

You will learn about:

  • Health and Safety in Construction
  • Covid 19 safe working practices
  • CSCS card touchscreen test
  • Introduction to environmental sustainability in construction
  • Cable avoidance
  • Preparing and operating a forward tipping dumper
  • Introduction to traffic marshalling
  • Fire marshalling
  • Asbestos training
  • Small tools
  • Cat and Genny

What next?

At the end of the course, you will be able to progress to our Phase 2 programme or apply for an entry-level position with Balfour Beatty Vinci.

Construction Gateway Phase 2

  • Duration: 4-5 weeks
  • Start date: Every 8 weeks (contact us to find out when the next programme is due to start.)
  • Location: Bordesley Green campus

Who is it for?

This course is designed for those candidates who have completed Construction Gateway Phase 1 or new candidates with construction experience and/or qualifications.

About the course

Training will be delivered in a simulated work environment at our Construction centre in Bordesley Green.

You will learn about:

  • Health and Safety in Construction
  • New roads and street works including – location and avoidance of underground apparatus, signing, lighting and guarding, excavation in the highway
  • Reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials
  • Reinstatement of sub-base and base in non-bituminous materials
  • Reinstatement of modular surfaces and concrete footways
  • CPCS Forward Tipping Dumper*
  • CPCS Ride on Roller*
  • Telehandler*

*You will get a choice of 2 out of 3 of these

What next?

At the end of the course, you will be able to progress to our Phase 2 Extended Programme or into employment with Balfour Beatty VINCI. More details about our Phase 2 Extended Programme will be available soon

Information Management Trainee

Receive specialist training to equip you with the skills, knowledge and qualifications leading to employment and a guaranteed interview.

Who is it for?

Candidates need to be age 19+ on or before 31st August 2021, unemployed, have lived in the UK for the last 3 years and in receipt of either:

  • Universal Credit
  • Job Seekers’ Allowance
  • Employment & Support Allowance

Candidates must also hold:

  • Level 2 English and maths
  • A driving licence is desirable

About the course

The short course includes:

  • Level 2 Award in Digital Skills for Work
  • Level 3 Award in Business Administration
  • Employability Skills, including:
          • Producing complex business documents
          • Understanding functions and roles within business organisations
          • Reviewing and developing office procedures
          • Carry out research and prepare a report
          • Be able to use digital skills to handle work-related information.
          • Be able to create and edit digital content for work-related purposes.
          • Be able to use digital skills to communicate in a work context.
          • Be able to work online and use digital devices safely and responsibly in a work context.
          • Communication in the workplace.

What next?

In just 6-8 weeks, trainees will secure the accreditation they need to transition onto a paid work trial with BBV. Candidates who successfully complete the trial will then progress into permanent jobs.
