If you popped into ‘The Street’ at Bournville College on this Valentine’s Day, you may have seen a sweet display of charity and fun.
South & City College’s BTEC Extended Diploma in Business students hosted an inspired set of Valentine’s Day fundraiser events, which raised over £300 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital with more to come. Everything was organised and run by the students (with their wonderful tutors) as part of developing their work experience, CVs and people skills… And to spread some love for charity!
A bake sale took centre-stage with plenty of treats from samosas to sweets, cakes and ice cream. Games were also running with Valentine’s-themed prizes, including a raffle and ping-pong tossing game to win beauty products & treats.
Staff even joined in on the fun, with teachers donning protective covers to get splashed by students and a multi-talented security guard running a DJ deck. As if that wasn’t enough, a marathon run was being done on the running machines. All for the good cause!
Zohaib Rauf, a Business student dishing out desserts in an alien outfit, said: “I’m enjoying the Business course a lot! The tutors are great and the information has been really useful to me. I honestly didn’t think it’d help me this much.
“I’m always trying my own businesses, such as car detailing and online shoe customisation, all while studying here at the college. You learn people skills, decision-making, everything really. And it’s just so good to be raising money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital! This is going on my CV, without a doubt.”
Lucy Carew, Head of School for Business and Professional Studies, said: “We are very proud of our students coming together for a good cause. This is just one example of how we provide real Business experiences for our students. Recently we have also had workshops on being Enterprising from local Entrepreneurs, and have set up our own Smoothie Bike Business – selling smoothies while you peddle. It has been great fun and students have really enjoyed it”.
We couldn’t be more proud of the students and staff who organised the fundraiser, as well as everyone who came along to part with their pennies. Birmingham Children’s Hospital offers expert care to more than 90,000 children and young people from across the country. This is just one of many efforts from our college students to support the local Birmingham Children’s Hospital, including another upcoming Fashion Show.
