Counting down to the Children’s Hospital Fashion Show

In the corner of the Fashion department at our Fusion campus are a rack of outfits that are a little remarkable. It’s only one month to go ‘til the Children’s Hospital Fashion Show, and we can’t wait!

What is the Fashion Show, you ask? It’s a magical event where patients and families from Birmingham Children’s Hospital come to The Crossing at our Digbeth campus, so that the children can safely and gloriously glam up for their very own catwalk.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for the children to feel amazing, while giving our Fashion students from our Fusion campus a great accessibility challenge and an experience that will serve them well in future careers. It’s also a perfect chance for the college to give back to the Birmingham community.

In preparation for the 2023 event in March, our friendly Fashion tutors including Carmen Burkett (pictured) once again teamed up with the lovely Dr Andrea Jester (pictured), Consultant Plastic/Hand Surgeon for the Birmingham’s Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and the Children’s Hospital team.

This meeting was to check on the outfits and set plans in motion. Dr Jester was the initial catalyst for teaming up with South & City College Birmingham for the first Fashion Show.

The wonderful outfits are being custom-made for each child. That means matching both the needs of their conditions with the need to look cool! Everything from tomboy looks to bright dresses, with cargo pants and t-shirts for any feeling uncomfortable on the day. Fashion is an expression of yourself, after all.

Plans are also in motion to set-up some gifts for the kids (Build-a-Bears for younger and vouchers for older). Shh, don’t tell them!

Stay tuned for more exciting check-ups as we count down to the show!

This is just one of many efforts from our college students to support the local Birmingham Children’s Hospital, including a Valentine’s Day fundraiser from our BTEC Extended Diploma in Business students.
