About the course

The role of the community interpreter is becoming increasingly important in our diverse communities. This Level 3 one-year course is ideal for a range of learners, including those who have an interest in the role of an interpreter, those who already have experience in this area and wish to further develop their skills, and those who wish to acquire formal qualifications to enable them to move on to higher qualifications. This course is considered the minimum requirement for accepting paid assignments in the UK

On this course, you will learn about the role of the community interpreter and how to utilise language skills effectively. The course includes mandatory units covering preparing for community interpreting assignments, supporting interpreting through sight translation, and developing your performance as a community interpreter. Optional units will explore different settings for interpreting.

What do I need?

In order to satisfy entry requirements for this qualification, you will need complete an initial assessment which includes one task with a text in your native/first language that has to be translated into English. The remaining tasks assess your English language skills (Level 2 or above) as well as knowledge and vocabulary related to a range of public services including Education, Health, Immigration, Welfare Benefits, Social Services, Mental Health, and Housing. You will be working at a high level (Level 3 in English and your first language) with the expectation of starting work in the field.

Upon successful completion of this course, you may wish to progress to higher level interpreting qualifications or pursue a career in interpreting.
