Learning and Teaching
This course is normally delivered part time over two years at our Bournville College (Longbridge) campus:
A variety of learning and teaching opportunities will be available on your course, approximately 33% of your learning will include lectures, tutorials and class room based or virtual learning. Studying can include individual and group working.
Higher education courses also require students to undertake independent study and so approximately 67% of your studies will be through independent learning, research, reading and completing assessments.
Assessment
93% of assessments are coursework based, 7% are in person which may be a presentation, and there are no exams. Assessments are designed to reflect the building services engineering sector and could be a live project, a case study, report or specific sector-based documentation such as plans or project.
Units to be studied
The course aims to develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the building services engineering sector through the study of seven modules, with a total credit value of 120 credits at Level 6.
Five core units:
• Building Control Systems for Building Services Engineering
• Facilities Management
• Project Management in Building Services Engineering
• Environmental Innovation in Building Services Engineering
• Major Project
In addition to the core units there are two optional units to be studied which have been selected to meet the requirements of either building services electrical or building services mechanical routes.
Electrical route:
• Introduction to Building Simulation (Radiance Electrical)
• Installation and Commissioning Electrical Services
Mechanical route:
• Introduction to Building Simulation (CFD Mechanical)
• Installation and Commissioning Mechanical Services
The overall qualification will be graded using undergraduate degree classifications:
First class, 2:1, 2:2, 3rd class, honours or a BSc without
You will study for 120 credits at Level 6 on this course, each unit has a credit value of 15 or 30 credits.
The units to be studied are:
• Building Control Systems for Building Services Engineering (15 credits)
This module will enable students to have a systematic understanding of the design ideas within the building services engineering sector regarding controls for commercial and domestic buildings. Control system fundamentals will be explored and examined to evaluate performance and cost. Building Automation and control systems (BACS) will be explored for a given building scenario. Students will examine open and closed loop control system, remote control and local control.
• Facilities Management (15 credits)
This module enables students to develop and manage a facilities management portfolio which supports an estates management strategy. It also enables students to develop and evaluate appropriate premises fabric and building services maintenance strategies and review the effectiveness of the strategies.
Students will explore the sustainable facilities framework that promotes a safe environment and a sustainable emphasis on properties. The students will gain an understanding that best practice maintenance management strategies, in relation to building services with a particular emphasis on sustainable best-fit technologies such as BMS and incorporating BIM. In addition, students will produce a maintenance programme and plan examining the different types of maintenance strategies.
• Project Management in Building Services Engineering (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to give students an understanding of the techniques and practices required for the effective project management of building services in the construction sector. Students will review the role of the project manager and gain skills to effectively design and install services for construction projects.

Learners must be aged 18 years on or before 31st August of the academic year that the programme commences. You will need a minimum Level 5 qualification equivalent to 240 FHEQ credits with a merit profile in building services engineering or a related discipline, this can be from a HND or Foundation Degree. Students will normally have English and maths GCSE at grade 4/C or above or hold equivalent qualifications. The BSC (Hons) Building Services Engineering (Top-up) degree awarded by De Montfort University will develop personal, professional and employability skills to prepare students for employment or continue in higher education. Typically graduates will continue to develop their professional careers in the building services sector. Many of our students will work towards Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) status upon graduation, by gaining a further two years of practical training. While for others, the course provides a transition to postgraduate study. Students can also continue into higher studies, enrolling onto a Master's degree.
