You will gain a solid understanding of the skills and demands required for a career in the public services, learning about a range of subjects such as leadership, health and lifestyle, citizenship, politics and law. You will have the opportunity to take part in activities which will enhance your understanding of a career in the industry; for example, opportunities to go on residential visits to develop team work and leadership skills, or listening to a range of guest speakers from the Army, Navy and the Police during your studies. Students who study this course may choose to progress to the HND in Public Services or choose to enter employment. Some of our students are Special Police Constables whilst studying, giving them excellent experience and a good foundation for a career in the Police.
The course is made up of 12 units, core units include:
• Government, policies and the public services
• Team development and leadership
• Citizenship and diversity
• Understanding discipline
• Public service fitness
Together with specialist units, taken from:
• Physical preparation for public services
• Police powers
• War, conflict and terrorism
• Major incidents
• Law and the legal system
• Custodial care
You will also study English and maths if you have not already achieved these.
You will need: Minimum Merit grade in Level 2 BTEC Public Services and a successful interview. 4 GCSE s Grade 9-4 (A-C) including maths or English at grade 4 (C) and the other at grade 3 (D).
On successful completion of the two-year course, you can move onto university level courses or employment. Opportunities are available to gain entry into a wide range of public sector occupations in both the uniformed and non-uniform sectors such as Local Government Administration, Customs and Excise, The Police Service, The Fire Service, The Armed Forces, The Military Police, Security or The Prison Service.
