Computing with Web, App & Data Technology BTEC Extended Diploma
In the first year, you will learn about the emerging networking technology and the internet of things. Develop your skills in handling data and developing an information system. Create a website using client side languages such as HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. Understand and use the fundamentals of programming technique learning languages such as C# and Python. Come back for the second year to develop further skills and knowledge in Cyber Security and Incident Management. Learn how to manage computing projects and analyse big data. Through a combination of external, internal and synoptic assessment, you will study both mandatory and optional units. There are opportunities to take part in national competitions, go on trips to the Space Centre, Computer Museum and BBC. Have the opportunity to take part in work placements in Ireland and further abroad such as Spain.

• Using social media in business
• Programming
• Website development
• Mobile apps development
• Computer games development
• Data modelling
• Information technology systems
• Creating systems to manage information
Second year unit to include:
• Cyber security
You'll need 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above, which should include maths and English. You may also access this course with a Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject, ideally with a distinction or merit grade, including maths and English. You will be invited to attend an interview.
Many former students have progressed on to university courses such as Computing, Games Development, Software Development and Forensic Computing or Cyber Security. Some have secured careers in the digital animation, special visual effects and as a technical analyst.
Some students progress with us on to our Higher Education courses in Computing at HND and Degree levels. Alternatively, some have gone onto an Apprenticeships in IT
You can continue developing your skills on a university course at either foundation or degree level or HND in Computing at our Digbeth or Bournville campuses. You could also gain employment directly within the industry in a variety of applications or take an advanced apprenticeship giving you employment experience as well as a qualification.
The qualification supports entry to, for example:
• HNC in Interactive Media
• FdSc in Business Computing
• HND in Engineering
• BSc (Hons) in Information Management for Business
• BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance
• BSc (Hons) in Information Management for Business
This course is part of the government funded Lifelong Learning Guarantee and is available free of charge to adult learners aged 19+ without a first full level 3 qualification.
