You will develop and practise the skills required for employment in gas engineering such as relevant gas safety principles, installing and maintaining appliances such as gas cookers, tumble dryers and central heating. Upon successful completion of the course you can apply for your Gas Safe Card and become a registered Gas Engineer.
Key areas that you will study:
• Health and safety in gas utilisation
• Scientific principles in gas utilisation
• Combustion and properties of gas
• Buildings services and structures
• Gas safety principles
• Specific core installation and maintenance
• Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework
• Install domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances
• The installation, commissioning and safety aspects of hot water systems for domestic use
You will need to hold a Level 1 in literacy and numeracy (Functional Skills) or this will be assessed by taking an online initial assessment at interview. In addition to theoretical study, on the course you will need to complete competency assessments within our ACS centre and provide a portfolio of on-site evidence of competency which is gained under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered engineer. You must supply the details of your Gas Engineer who you will be working with onsite, at enrolment. These details are required before being enrolled on to the course. You cannot enrol on this course without finding your own Gas Engineer to work with and giving the college their details. You must maintain contact with your onsite Gas Engineer over the duration of the course which is two years.
After completing this course you can go out into industry as a qualified Gas Engineer. You can become self-employed by starting your own business or work for a company as a gas engineer.
This course is part of the government funded Lifelong Learning Guarantee and is available free of charge to adult learners aged 19+ without a first full level 3 qualification.
