About the course

This course not only teaches you skills, how to visualise, how to focus on an area and realise progression goals related to your future interests and aspirations but also how to embrace your own creative identity. This course is supportive to you from the outset, content as well as setting you up to progress into employment or university. On this course you will be shown how to be experimental and developmental with your creativity in context to chosen pathway related work. You will be supported by a team of industry professionals with lots of experience in the fields of Art & Design. This course has two parts to it. The first part is exploratory and you will explore an exciting range of workshops, skills and concepts within the specialisms of Art & Design. The purpose of this phase is for you to fine tune and develop your portfolio skills. The second phase of the course is called confirmatory. The purpose of this phase is for you to select a pathway of choice and respond to it through the creation of a body of work. You will document your work and review your practice on a one-going basis. Your specialist pathway work has the exciting opportunity to be showcased at our end of year exhibition and shows throughout the year. This course is designed to enable you to explore a range of skills whilst at the same time recognising your creative identity you wish to hone in on to support your progression and aspirations. You will leave this course with a professional portfolio of work you can be proud of to celebrate your creative journey with us here at South & City College Birmingham, as well as having secured progression to your future destination.

Throughout the duration of the course, you will go on trips to local and regional exhibitions to support the development of your work. You will take part in live competitions and work experiences with local employers to gain experience into how your chosen subject looks in context to the world of work. You will experience inspirational talks from guest speakers working within the industry currently. There is also the opportunity to be selected to showcase your work at our end of year exhibition and live events within the year. You will be able to collaborate with other learners from your course as well as other departments. We have state-of-the-art facilities and studio spaces adopting a multi-disciplinary approach to your creative practice. You will also benefit from progression talks with previous students and one to ones focusing on you and your aspirations.

What do I need?

To join this exciting course you will need:
• A portfolio of past or current work you can bring to an interview.
• Commitment and enthusiasm for Art & Design. You will also need to fulfil the criteria below:
• 4 GCSEs Grade 4 or above including English, a minimum of 2 AS qualifications or an Extended Diploma in Art and Design.
