About the course

This Level 3 course looks at the diagnosis and repair of faults within the systems that you would have covered throughout your level 2 Diploma. The course will advance your skills and knowledge of all the systems on the modern motor vehicle and will fully prepare you for a rewarding career in the automotive industry as a Motor Vehicle Technician. At this level, you will be fully qualified to work at the likes of Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Toyota and all the major brands that deal with servicing, maintaining and rectifying warranty work at main dealerships. With the Level 3 diploma, you will also be eligible to apply for your MOT testers' certification if you meet all the other requirements. If you prefer to progress further in education, you will also have the level of knowledge and skills to progress to an advanced technician Level 4 course here with us.

Your practical ability and your theoretical knowledge will be assessed through practical observations and online, multiple choice assessments. Along with some of the topics and areas covered during the level 2 Diploma, the following are just a selection of key areas that you will cover during the level 3 Diploma:
• Skills and knowledge in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle combustion engine faults
• Skills and knowledge in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults
• Skills and knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
• Skills and knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
• Knowledge of carrying out non-high voltage operations on, near or with an electric vehicle
• Further soft skills and customer relations

What do I need?

As this is a more advanced course you will have already demonstrated good skills and knowledge of the modern motor vehicle systems. With this, you would need to hold a Level 2 City and Guilds Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent (i.e. IMI). Must have at least 3 GCSE's at grade 4 and above in English and Maths as well as a technology discipline GCSE. If you are currently looking at this course and you do not meet the criteria, please apply for the relevant course that is suitable for what you currently hold or are expecting.

Where can I progress next?

With this qualification, you will be qualified to progress into employment as a Trainee Motor Vehicle Technician at a main dealership or a specialist garage dealing with certain brands. Other employment opportunities include the likes of AA, RAC, KwikFit and many more. If you wish to progress further in education, you could progress to our Level 4 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles delivered at our Bournville (Longbridge) Campus. This is an even more advanced course which could lead you to Master Technician status depending on experience. If you are thinking of multi-skilling in a different area of automotive there are options to enrol on to a Level 2 Diploma in Accident Repair Body and Paint Principles at our Bordesley Green campus.

Is this course free?

This course is part of the government funded Lifelong Learning Guarantee and is available free of charge to adult learners aged 19+ without a first full level 3 qualification.
