Overview

This course is suitable for students with no prior knowledge of the subject. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of law in today's society, alongside an awareness of the rights and responsibilities of individuals and how this applies to their lives. You will also develop analytical and problem-solving capabilities as you learn to apply legal rules.

Course description

Teaching is delivered by a variety of methods such as small group work, reports, controlled assessments, presentations, quizzes, debates and practical research. The research undertaken will allow you to experience some of the practical, ethical and methodological issues that are necessary to progress to university.

In the first year of the course, you will study AS Law. This is a stand-alone qualification that is co-taught with A Level Law.

You will also be required to complete a minimum of 20 hours work experience in both year one and year two. This will help develop the personal qualities and skills required by universities and employers.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation and with health and safety of our students as a priority, we have redesigned this course to be delivered online as much as possible.

What areas will I study?

Key units studied:

  • Law making and the legal system
  • The concept of liability
  • Criminal law (offences against the person) or contract
  • Criminal law (offences against property) or tort, and concepts of law

Assessment is by AQA examination only. There are two 90 minute exams at AS Level, consisting of two papers. Each exam is worth 50% of the AS Level qualification. Successful completion of both exams will provide you with an overall AS grade. The AS exams and grade are separate from A Level and are not transferrable. The exams will take place in June. In order to progress to year two you must achieve at least a grade D at AS Level.

At A Level you will take 2 two hour exams. Each exam paper is worth 50% of the A Level qualification. You have to complete all exams to achieve you’re a Level qualification. The exams will take place in June.
