Barbering CG Technical Certificate
The Barbering Technical Certificate Level 2 is the most up-to-date qualification in barbering, aimed at learners who want to start a career in the barbering industry. It is suitable for adults and school leavers alike. After completing this course, you could progress immediately to employment as a barber, or further your studies by taking a Level 3 qualification.
You can study over 1 or 2 years depending on your ability.
This qualification covers all the basic skills you will need to qualify as a barber at a basic level or progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the barbering industry. You will work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training. The different ways in which college could support your learning, by working with both local and national barbering businesses, include:
- Structured work experience or work placements (only 16-18 yr learners need to complete this)
- Your attendance at classes or lectures given by industry experts
- Employers input into projects and exercises
- Employers who act as ‘expert witnesses' to contribute to the assessment of your work. This may occasionally be outside of your college timetable
Your course also includes tutorials, mandatory work experience and workshops. You will have the opportunity to attend external events including Salon International, Barbers Connect, and Blackpool Winter Gardens.
You will work in our purpose built salons/barbershop using high street branded products and we are stockists of professional products such as American Crew, Reuzel barbering products Wella, Milkshake, Schwarzkopf and Keracare. All your tutors are highly experienced barbers who have expertise in all hair types which will ensure you are able to offer services to a wide variety of clients with all hair types, and they will encourage you to develop your own personal barbering style.
The barbering team are passionate about barbering and ensuring the next generation of barbers are highly skilled and ready to gain employment. This maybe in high street salons, cruise ships, hotels, self-employed, and freelance. Our salons are used by Wella and Reuzel/ Milkshake to offer regular seminars to salons nationwide
You will need barbering equipment and the cost is approximately £250 (subject to change) which includes a uniform top. The equipment is ordered through the college at the time of enrolment; you may make an application to the learner support fund for help towards the cost and this award is subject to your individual circumstances. If you are not eligible for learning support fund you will be liable for the full cost of the equipment.
Uniform in the salons is compulsory and this consists of the barber top supplied in your equipment and plain black shoes with a closed in toe and heel (strictly no trainers) and plain black trousers (no leggings or jeans), both of which you must supply yourself.
What areas will I study?
Compulsory topics include:
- Principles of practice of hairdressing
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Cut men’s hair using basic techniques
- Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
- Dry and finish men’s hair
- Create basic outlines and detailing in hair
To achieve the Barbering Certificate Level 2 you must successfully complete the mandatory assessment components. These are:
- Level 2 Barbering Theory exam
- Level 2 Barbering Synoptic assignment (practical assessment)
In addition, you must achieve the mandatory employer involvement requirement for this qualification before you can be awarded a qualification grade.
