Business BTEC Extended Certificate
This Business BTEC Extended Certificate Level 2 is a course for 16-18 year olds, which has been designed to specifically develop knowledge and understanding of the world of business and enterprise. The course is offered as a one-year or two-year programme.
The one-year programme is for students who meet the entry requirements specified in the entry criteria.
The two-year programme has no entry requirements, however, students will need to have some literacy and numerical skills.
This could be a starting point for your career in business. You will be taught by skilled staff who provide good pastoral care.

This course will provide opportunities for students to gain a nationally recognised qualification, which will facilitate entry into employment or possible progression to other vocational qualifications.
Students will gain knowledge and develop skills, which help them to meet the needs of the business sector. Assessment will include: coursework, e-assessment, portfolio of evidence, task-based controlled assessment and practical examination. The course will include both mandatory and optional units.

What areas will I study?
This qualification is taught over 360 guided learning hours (GLH). It has mandatory and optional specialist units. The Mandatory units are:
-Enterprise in the Business World This unit introduces you to the language and terminology used in business. It explores what businesses do, trends that affect them, how they operate and the factors that influence their success.
Finance for Business (Externally Assessed) All businesses have to spend money before they can make a profit, and when they spend money, they incur costs. In this unit, you will explore the types of costs that businesses incur, from the initial start-up costs involved in setting up a business to the ongoing daily costs of running the business. You will then explore the ways in which the sale of products and services generates revenue, so that you can develop your understanding of profit.
Principles of Marketing (Externally Assessed) This unit will explore why the role of marketing is so important and consider how businesses use market research to make key decisions.
Promoting a Brand A successful business promotes itself to customers through its brand and image. In this unit, you will find out what it takes to build a brand and what a business has to consider when planning brand development. You will investigate the importance of branding to a business, the types of branding that are available and why businesses need to review and update their brands.
Principles of Customer Service This unit develops and broadens your understanding of customer service in different businesses. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of customer needs and expectations and be given the opportunity to examine a wide range of different types of internal and external customers.
Sales and Personal Selling This unit will introduce you to the methods of selling. You will develop techniques to sell successfully – including effective handling of customer queries and problems – and learn to apply them in different situations.
Introducing Retail Business In this unit, you will gain an understanding of the ways in which retailing has developed in the UK. You will learn about the structure and organisation of the retail sector and current trends in the industry
Recruitment Selection & Employment In this unit you will be introduced to the variety of job roles that exist within businesses and the various functions that are performed by individual roles, as well as the types of organisational structures used in businesses.
Using Business Documentation In this unit you will develop your knowledge and understanding of the most appropriate forms of written communication for conveying messages to internal audiences, external stakeholders and the public.
Building Successful Teams In this unit you will investigate why teams and teamworking are so important in business.
- Public Sector Business In this unit you will learn what is meant by public sector business, why such businesses exist, what they do and how they operate.
