This course is for those who have already achieved a HND, foundation degree or equivalent qualification in an early years or childhood studies sector, and wish to gain a full honours degree. You will build on your existing knowledge and develop real competence and critical judgement in a childcare context so you can progress within the industry.

Description

This course prepares you for the next steps in your professional and academic career. Childhood experiences shape the rest of our lives and being part of that journey is rewarding, challenging and often surprising. The course is designed to provide detailed knowledge for a variety of future careers working with children.

The course will give you the academic knowledge to succeed in this constantly-changing field, as well as an in-depth understanding of children’s social, physical, emotional and intellectual needs. You will study the contemporary environment surrounding those who work with children as well as exploring and implementing support strategies and improving your communication and management skills.

Key Areas

Contemporary issues in social context:

  • This module examines the concepts, philosophy and relevant legislation of various contemporary issues within the field of youth, community and family studies. These issues will be reviewed annually to ensure their contemporariness. A balance of childhood, youth and community, social care and health related issues will be determined.

Equity and inclusive practice:

  • This module conceptualises learning difficulties and disability and explores strategies to support children and young people with complex needs. You will analyse the key principles involved in areas such as policy, legislation, working with parents and other agencies, communication and interpersonal interaction, cognition and learning, behavioural, social and emotional aspects including those with higher abilities. There will be a flexible and adaptable approach to the delivery of the module.

Enhancing employability for professional practice:

  • This module will help you identify necessary professional and employability skills, preparing you for your future career path. It is designed to help you critically reflect on your practice, communication and presentation skills. Attending placement as a professional will help you apply theory to practice and support your professional and academic development.

Research Project:

  • This research module develops your independent learning, problem solving, analysis, assimilation and presentation of data. The project offers the opportunity to deepen your vocational, theoretical and subject knowledge. You are encouraged to use your previously achieved research skills, knowledge and expertise.

Entry Criteria

You will need to be aged 18 years or over on or before 31 August of the academic year the course commences.

Applicants must have one of the following:

  • A relevant HND with a merit profile
  • A foundation degree with 240 credits
  • 220 credits with a 50% grade average

Applicants must also have GCSE/IGCSE English Language and maths Grades A*-C or Grade 9-4, or an equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills qualification.

What Next

Our BA (Hons) top-up degree provides an excellent platform for those who want a career working with children in a professional capacity. Graduating with this degree will enable you to go on to work in child-related organisations in educations, welfare, leisure, advocacy or counselling.

In such a diverse sector, many of our graduates go on to become primary school teachers, nursery owners/managers, counsellors, social workers or specialise in working with children with learning difficulties.
