Level 4 Higher Certificate in Civil Engineering
The programme will provide you with a range of teaching and learning experiences to build on your existing skills and motivation so that you can contribute to a changing society, particularly within the field of civil engineering.
With a focus on personal, as well as professional development, our programme will engage you in rethinking civil engineering so that you can develop into an effective agent of change. The design and management processes of civil engineering will be at the centre of what we believe, teach and research. As you progress throughout the programme, you will become a competent and confident individual that can develop your personal and professional skills throughout the construction sector. In future careers, to also be influential in developing practice, provision, and policy, being resilient and self-assured is key here. Experienced tutors on the programme come from a wide range of professional backgrounds and are understanding the demands of study, work, and family life.
Being knowledgeable of the developmental, well-being and learning the needs of the client will be a common theme on the programme, you will develop an understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary to enable you to meet those needs and discover how you can respond in creative, reflective, and analytical ways to issues relating to civil engineering. Being mindful, of course, of the need to adopt a resourceful and reflective approach. As well as learning about management, practice, and provision within the field of civil engineering at home, we want our graduates to be outward looking with an awareness of global issues that relate to the field of civil engineering such as global warming, energy efficiency, zero carbon and sustainable issues.
You will become more confident to meet the challenges of a changing society especially within technological advances, competent as researchers in gathering data, and analysing it to evaluate and plan for change. Our graduates are our leaders in civil engineering who can, as professionals, demonstrate a real commitment to the ever changing environment, managing change and leading others effectively to make a positive impact on civil engineering sector.
Modules are timetabled on a semester basis, part time day release. Students will be expected to study two modules in semester, from September to January, followed by another two modules in semester 2, from February to June. This pattern of study will be repeated in year 2 with semesters 1 and 2. There are 5 mandatory modules and 2 optional modules depending on which pathway you are on.

Individual Project (Feasibility Study) The module will introduce students to the skills necessary to successfully complete an Individual project to a high standard. This the module will cover: understanding the research of others, literature reviews, research planning, research methods and report writing. These skills will then be used to develop initial designs and costings for a multi-storey commercial building.
Mechanical Services in Buildings The building services sector covers a wide variety of services this module will look at drainage, fire systems and transportation systems within a non-domestic building To include design systems for sanitation, fire suppression and transport that help buildings work better and safer for occupants, owners and the environment.
Mathematics in the Built Environment Students will also be able to perform the calculations necessary to establish anticipated performance of buildings. Students will be able to employ mathematical methods within a variety of contextualised examples; use analytical and computational methods to evaluate and solve engineering construction, civil engineering and building services problems; interpret data using statistical techniques and apply calculus techniques.
Structures This module examines the fundamental principles of structural design, standards, code of practices and regulations required to construct functional, safe civil engineering structures within the built environment. Main themes are bending moments, shear forces for simply supported steel concrete beams. Determination of deflection in simply supported steel and reinforced concrete beams. Calculations and analysis for an axial load carrying capacity of steel and reinforced concrete columns.
Surveying The unit will enable students to have an understanding of the importance of surveying the construction site to establish a starting point for the design and construction of the building. A topographical survey will be undertaken and transferring of levels when staking out a building.
Scientific Principles This module introduces scientific principles and a basic knowledge of the specialised building services application. The module has been designed to enable student studying civil engineer programmes to analyse, apply, investigate and evaluate scientific principles. Students will examine the fundamental principles of heat transfer, fluid flow, acoustics electrical networks and control systems.
- Construction Information & Technology In this module students will develop their awareness of different types of foundations and structures within the construction industry. Students will engage in producing both hand drawings and digital models of foundations for commercial buildings including, reading and editing of construction information, understanding how this information informs different stages of the process, and the value of collaboration in the information process.
