About the course

If you are interested in games development, animation and visual effects, but are not quite ready to study a Level 3 course, then this is the ideal foundation programme for you to develop those skills and get a taste of what this exciting industry is all about. This is a one year course, which will help develop a range of important industry-relevant skills, techniques and understanding, required to progress in the creative media industry and for the production of games.

You will learn to use the basic tools of digital graphics software, analyse and compare computer and video games and understand digital video editing and animation. This course will guide you through all the stages of games production including researching, comparing and analysing current games, story writing, character and design level design, through to 2D and 3D animation, 3D modelling and games engines. You will also find out about the jobs and career paths within the industry.

What are the entry requirements?

You will require 4 GCSEs grade 3 and above including English and maths.

Where can I progress next?

Upon successfully completion of the course you can progress on to one of our Level 3 courses, such as TV and Film Media Production; Animation, Games and VFX; Art and Design or Photography.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA.
