Hairdressing City & Guilds Technical Certificate
The Hairdressing Technical Certificate Level 2 is the most up-to-date hairdressing qualification and it has been developed with employers. This qualification is for you if you are looking to start a career in the hairdressing industry. At the end of this course, this qualification allows you to immediately enter employment as a hairdresser. You can study over 1 or 2 years depending on your ability.
This course is suitable for both school leavers and adults alike. You can study over 1 or 2 years depending on your ability. You will have the opportunity to attend external events including Salon International and Blackpool Winter Gardens and the Skills Show. We will help you get real experience with employers and this may include:
- Structured work-experience or work placements
- Classes or lectures given by industry experts in college
- Employer input into projects and exercises
- Employers who act as ‘expert witnesses' to contribute to the assessment of your work. This may occasionally be outside of your college timetable
You will work in our purpose built salons using high street branded products and we are stockists of professional products such as Wella, Milkshake, Schwarzkopf and Keracare. All our tutors are highly experienced hairdressers and they have expertise in all hair types, and they will encourage you to develop your own personal hairdressing style.
The hairdressing team are passionate about hairdressing and ensuring the next generation of hairdressers is highly skilled and ready to gain employment. This maybe in high street salons, cruise ships, hotels, self-employed, freelance and spa’s. Our salons are used by Wella and Milkshake to offer regular seminars to salons nationwide
You will need hairdressing equipment and the cost is approx. £200 (subject to change) which includes a uniform top. The equipment is ordered through the college at the time of enrolment, you may make an application to the learner support fund for help towards the cost and this award is subject to your individual circumstances. If you are not eligible for learning support fund you will be liable for the full cost of the equipment.
Uniform in the salons is compulsory and this consist of the tunic top supplied in your equipment, you must supply yourself, plain black shoes with a closed in toe and heel (strictly no trainers) plain black trousers (no leggings or jeans).
Study programme (aged 16-18 years only): If you did not achieve a grade 4 GCSE or grade 4 GCSE in English and maths, you will need to complete either GCSE or Functional Skills at the appropriate level. You will also need to complete work placement.
What areas will I study?
This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the hairdressing industries. You will study the following mandatory content:
- Principles of hairdressing and barbering services
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Style, set and dress hair
- Cut hair using basic techniques
- Colour and lighten hair
To achieve the Hairdressing Certificate Level 2 you must successfully complete the mandatory assessment components these are, Level 2 Hairdressing - Theory exam and Level 2 Hairdressing - Synoptic assignment (practical assessment). In addition, you must achieve the mandatory employer involvement requirement for this qualification before you can be awarded a qualification grade.
Theory exam dates are set by City and Guilds and students will be notified when the date is published.
