Introduction to Hairdressing City & Guilds
This Level 1 course will suit you if you are an adult returning to education and have little or no experience of hairdressing and would like to become a hairdressing assistant. The course is designed as a transition into education and will support you to develop skills needed for you to progress to the technical qualifications at a higher level. Basic English skills development is also available for you to study (not applicable if you study at the weekend or evening).
You will gain skills in a range of areas including assisting in the salon styling women’s' hair, as well as important customer service and communication skills, which will set you on the path to a successful career in the industry. You will also benefit from a range of enrichment activities to develop your skills further, these include trips and external speakers and visits from industry experts (evening learners are able to attend any external events which occur in the week).
You will work in our purpose built salons using high street branded products and we are stockists of professional products such as Wella, Milkshake, Schwarzkopf and Keracare. All tutors are highly experienced hairdressers, they have expertise in all hair types which will ensure you are able to offer services to a wide variety of clients with all hair types, and they will encourage you to develop your own personal hairdressing style. The hairdressing team are passionate about hairdressing and ensuring the next generation of hairdressers are highly skilled and ready to advance to higher qualifications and gain employment.
You will need hairdressing kit and the cost is approx. £200 (subject to change) which includes a uniform top. The equipment is ordered through the college at the time of enrolment, you may make an application to the learner support fund for help towards the cost and this award is subject to your individual circumstances. If you are not eligible for learning support fund you will be liable for the full cost of the equipment.
The wearing of a uniform in the salons is compulsory and this consists of the tunic top supplied in your equipment, you must supply yourself, plain black shoes with a closed in toe and heel (strictly no trainers) plain black trousers (no leggings or jeans).
What areas will I study?
You will complete four mandatory units at Level 1 and a number of optional units. Mandatory units are:
- Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
- Shampoo and condition hair
- Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
- Blow dry hair
Optional units can include assisting with hair colouring and lightening services, reception duties, assisting with shaving and blow drying men’s hair.
