Summary

This full time course is designed for students who have substantial work experience and who want to go to university. It is the equivalent of studying three A Levels in nine months, so it is a very intensive programme. All students study core skills and social science subjects sociology and psychology.

Description

You will study key theories in social science and their application through research skills. You will study sociology including crime and deviance, sociology of the family, sociology of health, poverty and health. You will also study psychology including social influence, psychology of learning, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology and psychology of stress. The course is assessed via a combination of coursework and exams. Each subject offers five units, each unit is worth three credits. You will need sixty credits in order to pass the course. Students are advised to contact universities prior to applying, to check that they will be considered for their chosen degree if they pass the diploma. Most universities require evidence of 'recent study' which means you should be planning to go to university within the next year or two. All students attend weekly tutorials which are designed to assist with study skills, confidence building and applying for university.

What Next

Students are advised to contact universities prior to enrolling, to check that they will be considered for their chosen degree if they pass this course. The Access to Higher Education certificate is valid for entry to some university degrees and some HND & HNC college programmes. Most universities require evidence of recent study so you should be planning to go to university soon after you have completed the diploma. Students who have completed this course have progressed to various degrees including: criminology, psychology, sociology, social work, youth studies, probation, law, anthropology, English, public health.

Entry Criteria

You will need GCSEs in English and maths A-C and you will need to pass an initial assessment at level 2. You should have substantial work experience (at least 3 months) in an area related to your chosen career.
