This course will develop your knowledge and skills in computer science, computer systems and networks, and social media in business, enabling you to progress to further study in the computing or other sectors
This qualification is for learners who are interested in progressing to further study in higher education. They will develop a common core of computing knowledge and study areas such as managing support systems, systems analysis and design and digital graphics in more depth, to develop some additional specialist computing knowledge.
Part of the New Generation BTEC Level 3 qualifications, this course runs as a two year programme with a Foundation Diploma for the first year which can then lead to the second year for students wishing to enter HE.
Learners will develop a substantial common core of knowledge, including communication and employability skills for IT, computer systems, and information systems, and allowing them the opportunity to study in more depth a range of skills required of someone who would like to take their career into this varied industry.
This qualification carries UCAS points and meeting admission requirements to many relevant HE courses. The one year qualification is equivalent in size to one and a half A Levels (3 A Levels for the full Extended Diploma).
The course is made up of the following units:
Year 1: Principles of Computer Science (Mandatory) Fundamentals of Computer Systems (Mandatory) IT Systems Security and Encryption (Mandatory) Business Applications of Social Media (Mandatory) Human-Computer Interaction Digital Graphics and Animation Computer Games Development Website Development Mobile Apps Development Managing and Supporting Systems Systems Analysis and Design
Year 2 units include some of the above, as well as:
Planning and Management of Computing Projects (Mandatory) Software Design and Development Project (Mandatory) The Impact of Computing
Students will be considered depending upon experience, qualifications and interview. Typically you will have one of the following:
5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including GCSE Grade C or 4 above in maths and English Language or BTEC First Diploma for IT Practitioners (Merit) or an equivalent IT qualification is desirable
However, if you do not have any IT qualifications you will be required to successfully complete an IT test at enrolment
All students will also be required to attend and satisfactorily complete a formal induction period
On successful completion you can move onto university or employment.
