Learn and apply the skills and knowledge for an exciting career in mobile app and web development. It is one of the fastest growing areas in the computing and IT industry, such as in software development, web/content development, mobile apps design, games design, programming and IT/business analysis support.

Course description

The course is the first part of a two-year programme. In your first year, the qualification you will be studying for is a Foundation Diploma and on successful completion, you can progress onto an Extended Diploma.

Completion of the Extended Diploma is the equivalent to 3 A Levels. You will be taught by tutors with a passion for computing and coding and who have years of experience in education and the industry. They will bring together theory and practice, so that you are able to develop high-level skills and knowledge and be creative as well as technically adept.

Industry visits and work experience will help you to expand your learning, and to understand how to apply what you learn to a range of business sectors.

What areas will I study?

Through a combination of external, internal and synoptic assessment, you will study both mandatory and optional units including:

  • Using social media in business
  • Programming
  • Website development
  • Mobile apps development
  • Computer games development
  • Data modelling
  • Information technology systems
  • Creating systems to manage information

2nd Year unit to include

  • Cyber security

What are the entry requirements?

You'll need 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above, which should include maths and English. You may also access this course with a Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject, ideally with a distinction or merit grade, including maths and English. You will be invited to attend an interview.

Where can I progress to next?

You can continue developing your skills on a university course at either foundation or degree level or HND in Computing at either our Digbeth or Bournville campuses. You could gain employment directly within the industry in a variety of applications or take an advanced apprenticeship giving you employment experience as well as a qualification.

  • FdSC in Business Computing
  • HND in Engineering
  • BSc (Hons) in Information Management for Business
  • BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance
  • BSc (Hons) in Information Management for Business
