Overview

This qualification builds on the fundamental principles of computing to give insight into how computers and devices communicate. With the rapid growth of cloud technology and the growing pressure on cyber-security, this programme offers students an opportunity to develop skills in networking and supporting modern, networked computer technologies. You’ll examine how networks are built and maintained to ensure maximum performance, availability and security.

Course description

You will study the following core units from the Extended Certificate in IT during the first year:

  • Information technology systems
  • Creating systems to manage information
  • Using social media in business
  • Website development

In addition, during the first year you will also complete two further units from the National Diploma in Computing and Network Support:

  • Principles of computer science
  • Building computer systems

In your second year, you will continue the Diploma in Computing with specialised units in networks:

  • Planning and management of computing projects
  • IT systems security
  • Managing and supporting systems
  • Virtualisation
  • Programmable devices and controllers (internet of things)
  • Computer forensics
  • Network operating systems
  • Communication technologies
