Overview

This course is designed for people who would like a successful career in music production, live sound, studio engineering, music for games & film, or progression to higher education. You will be able to develop your practical music production skills and techniques through sequencing, live sound and studio recording modules. You will take part in organising and performing in a major CD compilation project during the second year of the course. You will also learn listening skills, music and society together with how the music industry works.

Course description

The course is very practical and you will be required to produce written assignments. You will have the opportunity to develop your music technology techniques through sequencing and production work in the college’s Mac & PC sequencing suites and designated recording studios. Live sound techniques is taught in our 350 seat auditorium. The final studio module in the second year is called a Final Major Project which will involve you planning and delivering a professional standard compilation CD.

Our recording studios are built to a high standard, containing professional analogue and digital mixing consoles, Logic X and Cubase software on iMacs and a large array of industry standard microphones.

Our auditorium is state-of-the-art and hosts many performances through the year, not only from college students but also visiting performers. Music technology students will have the opportunity to provide the sound for these performances. You will have the opportunity to attend performances from visiting artists and talks from industry professionals who you will be able to meet.

The course also includes studying music for games, the history of popular music and how it is influenced by society, composing music, music for film and how the music industry works.

What are the entry requirements?

You don't need any formal qualifications for this course however you will be required to attend an interview and assessment.

Where can I progress to next?

Successful students can progress onto the HND in Popular Music Practice at the college followed by a Top-Up Degree, higher education at a university in a related subject or related work in the music industry.
