Overview

This BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma is a practical, work-related 1 year course for students who are interested in learning more about Public Services, and more specifically the Police Force.

You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands, and develop your leadership and teamwork skills by completing a range of activities.

You will benefit from learning from experienced lecturers who currently serve in the Police force and have strong academic and vocational backgrounds in other areas of Public Services.

You will also have the opportunity to continue with GCSE / Functional Skills Maths or English if you have not already achieved this.

Course description

You will gain a clear understanding of the skills and demands required for a successful career with the Police, learning about a range of subjects including Police Powers and the Law, Physical Preparation and Wellbeing, and Citizenship and diversity.

You will have the opportunity to take part in activities which will enhance your understanding of a career in the industry; for example, opportunities to go on residential visits to develop team work and leadership skills, or listening to guest speakers from different branches of the West Midlands Police during your studies.

Students who study this course may choose to progress to Higher Education or apply for the West Midlands Police Apprenticeship scheme. Some of our students become Special Police Constables whilst studying, giving them excellent experience for their future careers.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation and with the health and safety of our students as a priority, we have redesigned this course to include a mixture of classroom-based learning and online learning.

The course is made up of 5 units, core units include:

  • Citizenship and diversity
  • Behaviour and discipline in the uniformed protective services
  • Physical preparation, health and wellbeing
  • Teamwork, leadership and communication in the uniformed protective services

Together with specialist units, taken from

  • Custodial care
  • Police powers and the law
  • Introduction to criminology
  • Professional development in the uniformed protective services
