Summary

A Level pathways are designed to prepare you for higher education and beyond. As part of the A level programme students will be encouraged to complete a week of work experience. The science department has link with Aston University and Coventry University. We support students in applying for Masterclasses at universities, placements and programmes to assist applications to University. Previous science students have completed programmes such as the Nuffield Science placement and the University of Birmingham Routes to Progressions scheme and others at the end of the first year. Select students have been entered into the Physics Olympiad, a national competition. In addition to quiet study areas, we offer A level students exclusive quiet study room.

Description

The course is divided into a variety of topics, each containing different key Physics concepts. Once you have learnt the key features of a particular topic, you move on to consider the applications in real situations. This course complements subjects such as Maths, Electronics, Geography and Chemistry. We have access to e-journals, e-books and books. The college also holds activities for British Science Week such as ‘Meet the Scientist’ event. We also hold A level revision workshops and conferences as part of developing study skills.

Key Areas

AQA syllabus will be followed

Year 1 Measurement and their errors Particles and radiation Waves Mechanics and materials Electricity

Year 2 Further mechanics and thermal physics Fields and their consequences Astrophysics Medical physics Engineering physics Turning points in physics Electronics Practical endorsement

To achieve a pass in this component of the course, students must demonstrate that they are competent in all the expected practical skills. The written examinations will include questions that assess students’ understanding of experimental methods. At the end of year 1 there will be two papers and three papers at the end of year 2. This course has had a 100% pass rate for the last two years.

What Next

Throughout the course, students are introduced to the ideas of physics and their application to a variety of contexts. The course thus provides a valuable foundation for students who go on to do physics or related subjects at university. Some of the careers, students can eventually progress on to are; Aeronautical Engineer, Architect, Climatologist, Doctor, Nuclear Scientist, Pharmacist, Teacher, Mathematician. Past students have gone onto Russell Group Universities to study Physics and maths as a degree and Electronic Engineering to name a few.

Entry Criteria

Year 1 of A-level Physics requires 6 GCSEs at grades A*-C with a B or above in Triple Science Physics and a B or above in another Triple Science. Students with two B’s in Double award Science will also be considered. You also need to have a B or above in maths and a C or above in English (on the higher papers). Enrolment is subject to a satisfactory completion of an induction period.
