The course is for those who would like to teach English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). It is an introductory course for those who have little or no previous experience of teaching in this subject area. It is also suitable for teachers qualified to teach other curriculum areas but wishing to gain an ESOL specialism.

CELTA is a practical course with a focus on the principles of effective language teaching. You will undertake a total of six hours teaching practice working with ESOL classes at two levels of ability. You will complete four written assignments and undertake six hours of observation of experienced teachers. In addition, you will be required to research and prepare for teaching and assignments which may involve up to 10 hours of study at home each week. You will be assessed throughout the course with no final examination.

Key Areas

  • Language skills
  • Language analysis

What Next

CELTA is recognised by most employers as the initial qualification for teaching ESOL so you will be able to apply for employment in the UK or abroad on completion. Once you are in a teaching post or have secured some teaching hours, most UK employers will expect you to continue your training to a diploma in teaching and training or a PGCE, if you have not already done so.

Entry Criteria

Applicants for the course must be at least 20 years old, have a good standard of education (for example A Levels, a degree or equivalent qualifications) and an excellent standard of English, both written and spoken.

The course is for one day each week for 25 weeks, starting in mid-October and finishing in early June.
