This is a 120-credit, two year programme validated and quality assured by Birmingham City University (BCU) and delivered at Bournville College as a partner of the University.
The Diploma in Education and Training (DET) in Post-Compulsory Education is a well-established programme leading to a recognised qualification for the sector. The course is aimed at those wishing to teach in post-14 provision, 16+ and adult education. The scope and range of the teaching qualification is considerable and so provides opportunities for teaching in Colleges, Schools, Sixth Form Centres, Adult Education Departments, Vocational Centres, Training Agencies and Offender Learning (Prison Education). This level of flexibility is a particular strength of the programme.
Students must undertake concurrently a minimum of 150 hours teaching practice with post-16 learners over the two years. These teaching hours can be on a voluntary basis.
All students register both with the college delivering the programme and BCU and therefore can access the learning resources available at both.
The programme will provide you with a thorough preparation for undertaking certain roles in teaching, facilitating learning or training and will offer you the opportunity to develop your practice through developmental reflection and theoretical perspectives. There are four key modules that you will study over two years:

Teaching Hours: 150 hours of teaching will be required to complete the course. Teaching hours can be voluntary or paid. Students should attempt to source their own teaching hours to fulfil the requirements of the course. We can help you by supplying contact details in some cases liaising with likely providers but cannot guarantee you a placement. All students will need to undergo a DBS check before commencement of teaching.
All Applicants are required to possess either a grade C or above in GCSE English and maths or a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English and maths. Candidates are expected to have a minimum level 3 qualification in the subject they wish to teach.
Upon successful completion of the programme learners will be able to progress on to a relevant BA (Hons) top up degree within post-compulsory education and training.
