Tourism and hospitality are global industries and major contributors to national and international economic development. The Tourism and Hospitality Management Foundation Degree will help you to develop technical skills and knowledge, alongside business acumen, for management careers in the hospitality, tourism and events industries.

Course description

Advancement for graduates in these industries can be rapid. Diverse career opportunities are available across the wide spectrum of the hospitality and tourism industry, in sectors such as conference and exhibition management, attractions management, resort management and development, destination marketing and travel services management.

What areas will I study?

Year 1 (Level 4) modules:

  • Food, beverage and accommodation applications
  • Hospitality and tourism business principles
  • People and organisations
  • The hospitality and tourism customer experience
  • Travel geography

Year 2 (Level 5) modules:

  • Human resources for hospitality managers
  • International travel operations
  • Marketing communications for hospitality
  • Operational finance for hospitality and tourism
  • Room revenue management
  • Tourism investigations
  • Events operations

During the course there may be additional costs; overseas residential £350, uniform and knives approximately £150.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry onto this programme is via one of two routes; applicants who have completed a Level 3 programme of study and attained a minimum of 56 UCAS Tariff points from at least one A Level or equivalent BTEC qualifications.

Alternatively, applicants that do not meet these tariff points but have relevant industry experience will also be considered upon interview.

Non-tariff: Non-UCAS Tariff based Level 3 qualifications are also considered for entry.

It is desirable that applicants have a grade 4 or above in GCSE English language and maths or hold an equivalent Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English and maths however, it is not essential. Applicants may also be required to provide academic references.

Where can I progress to next?

On completion of this Foundation Degree, you can progress onto the final stage of BA (Hons) Hospitality Business Management / Hospitality with Events Management or Hospitality and Tourism Management at University College Birmingham, which is accredited by the University of Birmingham.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to move into a wide variety of areas within the industry, specialising in areas such as human resources, marketing, public relations and financial management within hotel, resort and event management organisations.
