Overview

Engineers play a vital role in today’s society. They contribute to the design, development and manufacture of products that allow us to do things on a daily basis that we take for granted, from talking on your mobile phone to flying on holiday on a commercial aircraft.

Our courses encompass a choice of pathways including Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering. There is a range of content from subjects such as Engineering Design, Mechanical Principles & Applications and Engineering Maths to units such as Communication for Engineers, where you’ll learn how to communicate information to your peers and colleagues.

Our teaching and learning philosophy is “you can’t just read a text book and become a good engineer”. Engineering is a practical subject. We holistically develop your theoretical and practical skills in parallel so that wherever you progress to, you’re ready and have the skills for what lies ahead. You’ll be taught in a state of the art facility with modern equipment by an expert team of lecturers who collectively bring a wealth of industrial and research experience with them.

You will have the opportunity to progress on to a degree at the University of Birmingham, within its School of Engineering. You will be taught by academics who are conducting research that is changing the way we live forever. Whilst at the University of Birmingham you will work alongside Mechanical and Civil Engineers to develop designs for technologies with impact in the world.

Course description

The programme provides a progression route to Higher Education which supports the regional skills agenda, including widening participation and increased female participation in STEM. The core academic disciplines are Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) and Mechatronic and Robotic Engineering. These address a regional core skills gap, and will include development of quantitative, digital, knowledge transfer, wellbeing, personal development, problem solving, creativity, reflection and employability skills. The curriculum will include access to facilities across all partners, so that students are integrated into the study communities of all teaching partners; this is crucial to supporting the transition from SCCB to the University of Birmingham.

The wrap-around provision from UCB (including academic and employability skills support, intervention workshops for mathematics skills, and online content) and the mathematics support resources from the University of Birmingham are key elements missing from existing progression pathways.

The programme will provide a parallel path to the first two years of the traditional degree programmes at the University of Birmingham. The innovation here is the teaching and learning strategy, and wrap-around support will be geared towards the student cohort, with the longer terms at SCCB providing the opportunity to do this. Support for summer industrial placements will be built into the programme as “value-added” rather than credit bearing; the experience will connect to the project work through the academic years, for which the syllabus, learning objectives and assessment methods are professionally-focussed.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need grades CCC in A Level, or 96 UCAS points e.g. BTEC National Extended Diploma with grades MMM from a linked subject such as Engineering, Applied Science and Computing.

GCSE mathematics is essential.

Where can I progress to next?

You will continue your studies on to the final year of the BEng programme at the University of Birmingham. The School of Engineering has strong links with industry and graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Arup, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, Jaguar Land Rover, National Grid and Wessex Water, just to name a few.
