Overview

The programme will provide you with a range of teaching and learning experiences to build on your existing skills and motivation so that you can contribute to a changing society, particularly within the field of building services engineering.

With a focus on personal, as well as professional development, our programme will engage you in rethinking building services engineering so that you can develop into an effective agent of change. The design and management processes of building services engineering will be at the centre of what we believe, teach and research. As you progress throughout the programme, you will become a competent and confident individual that can develop your personal and professional skills throughout the building services engineering sector. In future careers, to also be influential in developing practice, provision, and policy, being resilient and self-assured is key here. Experienced tutors on the programme come from a wide range of professional backgrounds and are understanding the demands of study, work, and family life.

Course description

Being knowledgeable of the developmental, well-being and learning the needs of the client will be a common theme on the programme, you will develop an understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary to enable you to meet those needs and discover how you can respond in creative, reflective, and analytical ways to issues relating to building services engineering. Being mindful, of course, of the need to adopt a resourceful and reflective approach. As well as learning about design, practice, and provision within the field of building services engineering at home we want our graduates to be outward looking with an awareness of global issues that relate to the field of building services engineering such as global warming and energy efficiency.

You will become more confident to meet the challenges of a changing society especially within technological advances, competent as researchers in gathering data, and analysing it to evaluate and plan for change. Our graduates are our leaders in building services engineering who can, as professionals, demonstrate a real commitment to the ever- changing environment, managing change and leading others effectively to make a positive impact on the built environment sector.

Modules are timetabled on a semester basis, part time day release. Students will be expected to study two modules in semester 1, from September to January, followed by another two modules in semester 2, from February to June. This pattern of study will be repeated in year 2 with semesters 1 and 2. There are 5 mandatory modules and 2 optional modules depending on which pathway you are on. Mechanical Students will study air conditioning & ventilation in buildings and heating of buildings. Electrical students will study electrical principles and alternative energy.

What areas will I study?

Detailed module information can be found on the course Attain page, each module will also contain recommended reading lists. An overview of each module is provided below:

  1. Individual Project (Feasibility Study) The module will introduce students to the skills necessary to successfully complete an Individual project to a high standard. This the module will cover: understanding the research of others, literature reviews, research planning, research methods and report writing. These skills will then be used to develop initial designs and costings for a multi-storey commercial building.

  2. Mechanical Services in Buildings The building services sector covers a wide variety of services this module will look at drainage, fire systems and transportation systems within a non-domestic building To include design systems for sanitation, fire suppression and transport that help buildings work better and safer for occupants, owners and the environment.

  3. Mathematics in the Built Environment Students will also be able to perform the calculations necessary to establish anticipated performance of buildings. Students will be able to employ mathematical methods within a variety of contextualised examples; use analytical and computational methods to evaluate and solve engineering construction, civil engineering and building services problems; interpret data using statistical techniques and apply calculus techniques.

  4. Scientific Principles This module introduces scientific principles and a basic knowledge of the specialised building services application. The module has been designed to enable student studying building services engineering programmes to analyse, apply, investigate and evaluate scientific principles. Students will examine the fundamental principles of heat transfer, fluid flow, acoustics electrical networks and control systems.

  5. Construction Information & Technology In this module students will develop their awareness of different types of foundations and structures within the construction industry. Students will engage in producing both hand drawings and digital models of foundations for commercial buildings including, reading and editing of construction information, understanding how this information informs different stages of the process, and the value of collaboration in the information process.

  6. Air Conditioning and Ventilation in Buildings Students will be introduced to principles of design for air conditioning and ventilation that are present in buildings and will look at future sustainable low energy innovations. Pre-design briefs, design data, cooling loads, overheating, peak summertime temperatures, commissioning and handover procedures, soft landings, post-occupancy surveys will all be included in this module, allowing students to understand the general principles of air conditioning and ventilation systems for buildings.

  7. Heating of Buildings This module introduces students to the principles of the design and installation of heating systems for non-domestic buildings. Students will understand the principles of the design, sizing and specification of non-domestic heating systems and components.

  8. Electrical Principles Students will be introduced to principles of design for electrical power while looking at energy efficiency in the design, with regards to commercial builds. Sustainable low energy innovations within the electrical sector will be examined regarding payback periods and usefulness.

  9. Alternative Energy The different types of energy production being used in the UK to reduce carbon production and remove unsustainable materials from the energy make up will be investigated. The unit will look at Photo Voltaic, Hydro power, Wind Turbines, and include new developments in alternative energy as they are developed in this fast moving subject.
