With a focus on personal, as well as professional development, our programme will engage you in rethinking construction management so that you can develop into an effective agent of change. The design and management processes of construction management will be at the centre of what we believe, teach and research. As you progress throughout the programme, you will become a competent and confident individual that can develop your personal and professional skills throughout the construction sector. In future careers, to also be influential in developing practice, provision, and policy, being resilient and self-assured is key here. Experienced tutors on the programme come from a wide range of professional backgrounds and are understanding the demands of study, work, and family life.

Course description

Being knowledgeable of the developmental, well-being and learning the needs of the client will be a common theme on the programme, you will develop an understanding of the skills and knowledge necessary to enable you to meet those needs and discover how you can respond in creative, reflective, and analytical ways to issues relating to construction management. Being mindful, of course, of the need to adopt a resourceful and reflective approach. As well as learning about management, practice, and provision within the field of construction at home we want our graduates to be outward looking with an awareness of global issues that relate to the field of construction such as global warming, energy efficiency, zero carbon and sustainable issues.

You will become more confident to meet the challenges of a changing society especially within technological advances, competent as researchers in gathering data, and analysing it to evaluate and plan for change. Our graduates are our leaders in construction management who can, as professionals, demonstrate a real commitment to the ever- changing environment, managing change and leading others effectively to make a positive impact on construction sector.

On achievement of a degree in Construction Management in Sustainability you will be able to progress onto post graduate or masters level study. Any further study depends on your degree classification to establish your point of entry. De Montfort University offer a range of post graduate programmes including an MSc in Energy & Sustainable Building Design, MSc Project Management, MSc Risk Management, etc. there will be opportunities to discuss progression from your programme with the University’s Link Tutor.

What areas will I study?

Modules are timetabled on a semester basis, part-time day release. Students will be expected to study two modules in semester 1, from September to January, followed by another two modules in semester 2, from February to June. This pattern of study will be repeated in year 2 with semesters 1 and 2. There are 5 mandatory modules and 2 optional modules depending on which pathway you choose.

  • Individual Project (Feasibility Study) The module will introduce students to the skills necessary to successfully complete an Individual project to a high standard. This the module will cover: understanding the research of others, literature reviews, research planning, research methods and report writing. These skills will then be used to develop initial designs and costings for a multi-storey commercial building.

  • Mechanical Services in Buildings The building services sector covers a wide variety of services this module will look at systems within a non-domestic building; to include design systems for sanitation, fire suppression and transport that help buildings work better and safer for occupants, owners and the environment.

  • Mathematics in the Built Environment Students will also be able to perform the calculations necessary to establish anticipated performance of buildings. Students will be able to employ mathematical methods within a variety of contextualised examples; use analytical and computational methods to evaluate and solve engineering construction, civil engineering and building services problems; interpret data using statistical techniques and apply calculus techniques.

  • Site Supervision The construction of buildings and infrastructure involves many different types of work and many different people. The skills required to successfully manage the diverse groups of people on a building site, and to monitor and assess their work, is critical to both the success of the project and to ensure the safety of those working. Through this unit students will develop the skills and techniques necessary to manage the people and processes of a building site, ensuring the quality of work, safe working practices and the interactions of different ‘trades’. Topics covered in this unit include: evaluating construction information, monitoring quality, identifying and notifying of defects, sustainable methods of construction, site safety regulations, health & safety regulations, people management, performance management, site meetings, contractor’ and sub-contractor relations..

  • Surveying The unit will enable students to have an understanding of the importance of surveying the construction site to establish a starting point for the design and construction of the building. A topographical survey will be undertaken and transferring of levels when staking out a building.

  • Construction Management and Law The aim of this unit is to develop and provide students with a holistic understanding of construction management processes and an appreciative knowledge of law and contract. Students will investigate and research the modern construction industry, both from the practical skills embedded within the industry through to its linkage with development on-site and the connection with construction management and techniques used within the construction industry. This unit will also enable learners to develop an understanding of the national legal system, the Law of Contract and the liabilities and responsibilities of each party to a contract. Learners will also develop a working knowledge of the legal principles, procedures and requirements relating to the different types of contract used when undertaking national construction or civil engineering projects.

  • Construction Information & Technology In this module students will develop their awareness of different types of foundations and structures within the construction industry. Students will engage in producing both hand drawings and digital models of foundations for commercial buildings including, reading and editing of construction information, understanding how this information informs different stages of the process, and the value of collaboration in the information process.
