Overview

This is a FREE course to train people who are already in work in Hybrid / Electric repairs maintenance and diagnosis.

This is a short course requiring attendance of 5 days in either a block release or day release format.

Candidates studying for this programme on successful completion will receive certificates in:

IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities

Candidates must complete the Level 4 qualification to be successful.

Course description

More than 10 million electric vehicles (EVs) are on the road across the world in 2020. The European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, or ACEA, said registrations of hybrid electric passenger cars accounted for 20 per cent of the total EU market during the third quarter (July-September 2021).

In the West Midlands the plan for green recovery builds on commitments to make the West Midlands carbon neutral by 2041, with plans to convert all taxis, buses and 50% HGVs to electric by 2031.

The demand for trained mechanics, repairers with maintenance and diagnostic skills will be high to meet this increase.

Having a trained electric vehicle workforce will offer more opportunities for small and medium size businesses without having to meet the demands of the upskilling costs. Normally this course would cost £1,500 per candidate.

This is a Government In Work Skills initiative to rapidly upskill or retrain staff in the engineering sector through the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology.

What areas will I study?

IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles and Components

Provides the knowledge and skills required to work on live high voltage vehicle electrical components and associated systems. A good level of electrical understanding is required prior to completion of this unit. The content of this unit should always be used in conjunction with manufacturers’ specific safety data.

The award will enable candidates to:

  • Understand electrical principles relating to low and high voltage vehicle systems
  • Know the hazards and first aid associated with working on live high voltage vehicle systems
  • Know how to reduce the risks to yourself and others when working on live high voltage vehicle systems
  • Understand high voltage (HV) vehicle systems and components
  • Carry out repairs on live high voltage vehicle systems safely

IMI Level 3 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement

Designed for technicians who maintain and repair electric/hybrid high voltage vehicle systems and components. It contains the knowledge and skills required to work on live high voltage vehicle electrical components and associated systems. The award will enable candidates to:

  • Know about electric/hybrid vehicle system components and operation
  • Understand the hazards surrounding electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Know how to reduce the risks to yourself and others when working on electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Know how to safely prepare the vehicle when carrying out routine maintenance on electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Be able to work safely on an electric/hybrid vehicle

IMI Level 2 Award in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Activities

This award introduces learners to electric/hybrid vehicle technology including, and in particular, the safety requirements of working on these types of vehicles, e.g. whilst carrying out routine vehicle servicing, general repairs that are not related to the high energy electrical system

The award will enable candidates to:

  • Know about electric/hybrid vehicle system components and operation
  • Understand the hazards surrounding electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Know how to reduce the risks to yourself and others when working on electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Know how to safely prepare the vehicle when carrying out routine maintenance on electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Be able to work safely on an electric/hybrid vehicle
