The aim of the Top-up degree in Working with Children and Families is to extend students’ knowledge and skills to Level 6 studies to become reflective, resilient practitioners, who can adapt to the demands of the youth and community sector in England, with a global perspective.

Students will focus on and demonstrate the values that underpin the sector of partnership, social justice, community empowerment and equality. Students will develop skills that will enable them to be responsive to the changes in the sector and develop as reflective practitioners and future managers or leaders. Placement practice is not a requirement on this course, but students may have to reflect on prior knowledge and experience while completing the course.

Course description

The programme will focus on contemporary issues and practices within the sector, enabling students to gain an understanding of, and the capacity to apply and integrate, theoretical frameworks and key concepts relevant to practice in Working with Children and Families. Students will develop subject skills to enable analysis of relevant concepts, theories and issues of policy, and their use in informing evidence-based practice to enable informed judgements on complex ethical and professional issues. Generic graduate skills such as developing communication, organisation and analytical skills will also be supported on the programme.

What areas will I study?

  • Exploring Contemporary Themes in Working with Children & Families

The Exploring Contemporary Themes in Working with Children and Families module examines the concepts, philosophy and relevant legislation of various contemporary issues within the field of working with children and families. These issues will be reviewed annually to ensure their contemporariness, thus some issues may remain on the syllabus for a short while, whilst others will be renewed. Some of the themes to be explored; looked after children, poverty, modern slavery, social inequality, domestic violence and harm, global perspectives, homelessness and refugee children and mental health.

  • Dissertation

The Dissertation module enables students to research and study an area of personal interest in relation to working with children and families. The dissertation enables students to design, plan, and execute a research project in their chosen area, using a context-theory-access-measurement framework. Whilst submission is not due until the end of Semester Two, the module will be launched at the beginning of Semester One, where students will access a series of research methodology and methods workshops and tutorials. Submission of an ethics form is a requirement in semester one.

  • Safeguarding and Child Protection in Policy and Practice

This will provide the opportunity to study historical and contemporary concerns that have shaped policy and practice in the 21st century. Current policy and legislation will be explored in the context of practice alongside exploration of different roles and responsibilities of professionals. The impact of abuse on the lives and victims and their families will also be explored.

  • Leadership and Management in the Working with Children and Families Sector

This module encourages students to consider and apply a range of leadership and management theories, and models within an ethical framework and a focus on values. Students will be able to explore unique features of leadership and management in a working with children and families setting and the role that leadership has in challenging inequality in the workplace.
