Digbeth Music students play gig at award-winning venue

And a round of applause for our next generation of superstars! Music Performance students from Digbeth held a pulse-pounding and triumphant gig at The Rainbow pub, one of the hearts of Digbeth night-life with its cocktail lounge and basement venue.

The Rainbow won ‘best music venue’ at the Birmingham Music Awards 2022, and the students made the most of it. The takeover was a full evening show with warm-up and rehearsals, a set-list from each group of students, paying customers and high-end lighting and audio equipment.

Rapping, singing, playing guitars and drumming, the students jammed out to chart-topping covers from the likes of Ed Sheeran, B.o.B, Jessie J and 21 Pilots.

Seb, guitarist taking a Level 3 Music Performance BTEC National Extended Diploma, said: “It was very exciting! We got lots of practice at our campus stages, The Crossing and our canteen, but this was our first performance off-campus. We got matching tops printed for the night with our band name: ‘Illusion’. We’re looking to do more band work as a group after this for sure!

All the practice paid off – both the audience and The Rainbow staff were supremely impressed with the calibre of South & City College Birmingham talent. That’s no surprise if you’ve passed through the halls of Digbeth campus, but it’s still a great source of pride. Congratulations to all!

Music Lecturer Tana Bartley said of the night: “The students did amazing. At South & City College Birmingham, we have the advantages and the resources to develop the next generation of artists and musicians. It’s not just about teaching the skills; it’s providing them the experience to become great performers.

“We offer students opportunities to develop their skills and explore musical genres to prepare them for the real world. This is the second time we have collaborated with The Rainbow, and we will continue to develop that relationship as Digbeth is a prominent place for live music in Birmingham.”
