Apprenticeships provide a work-based training programme that has been developed by your sector. They are an effective way to either recruit or train new employees and to retrain and upskill your existing workforce. There are now Apprenticeships to cover most occupations starting at entry level and progressing to degree level and beyond.

Apprenticeship Levy – what does this mean to you?
- Payable from 6 April 2017 by all employers with a pay bill in excess of £3 million. It is charged at 0.5% and paid through PAYE on a monthly basis.
- Employers have 24 months to use their levy to train new and existing employees as Apprentices and can access additional ‘top ups’ of 10% to their on-line accounts if they spend more.
- If you’ve started to pay this tax, you’ll already be thinking about apprenticeships and how you recruit new apprentices and upskill your existing workforce with these funds.

How will the Apprenticeship Levy affect smaller businesses?
- Government funds 90% of Apprentice Training and Assessment Costs for businesses with a wage bill below £3 million
- Organisations with less than 50 employees who take on an Apprentice aged between 16 and 18 years old will not be required to make any financial contribution towards the cost of their training and assessment.
- There is also a £1,000 cash incentive for taking on a 16-18 Apprentice and for 19-24-year-olds who meet eligibility conditions.
- National Insurance Exemptions are available for apprentices under 25 who are not paying higher level tax.
