The Government has recently announced a drive to plug skills gaps and boost access to more high-quality training alternatives for adults. As part of the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology, the college has been awarded funding to offer free places on short courses to upskill staff in the motor vehicle sector. This initiative will improve the industry’s readiness to meet increased demand for the servicing and maintenance of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Hybrid and electric vehicles are the way forward in our region and nationally. There is currently a skills need for the developing technology and industry. The college’s investment in new qualifications and facilities at the Longbridge (Bournville College) campus will provide local people with the opportunity to be trained at a higher technical level and gain jobs. While at the same time supporting industry by enabling companies to employ skilled people and upskill existing employees.

Mike Hopkins, Principal, said: “As a college, we are very proud to have invested in a high-end facility for hybrid and electric vehicles, there is a massive local demand for these skills and we are now in a position both to upskill and to train people in the technology of the future.”
