Two Employability Conferences have recently been held at our Bournville and Bordesley Green campuses. They were designed to deliver valuable networking and learning opportunities for our students. Students were able to engage with employers from a variety of industries, giving an insight into each organisation together with careers advice about entering, working and progressing within the industry.

Whilst employment, work placements and extended placements are all very important, an event such as this gives students the opportunity to improve their employability skills along with their personal and social skills.

Over 170 students attended the conferences and they were joined by over 30 employers over the 2 days of events. We were fortunate to have guests who offered some words of motivation for our students. InBusiness members, Phil Brown, an Olympic silver medallist and Tom Ross, our InBusiness President, gave some inspirational advice, together with Neil Walters who is Chair of the National Federation of Builders, and was also on hand to offer guidance about gaining employment in the building industry.

Zoe Bignall, Housing Manager for Birmingham City Council said, “[The] event was one of the best that I have attended in a long while. The students demonstrated a willingness to listen, asked intelligent questions and showed a level of maturity that appears to be lacking with this generation.

Many of them are focused and driven in terms of their future careers and realistic about where they need to be to start that journey. They were a credit to the college and the teaching staff.”
