May 2019 saw a team of South & City College Birmingham Level 3 Electrical Engineering students win the West Midlands regional heat of Fast Trackers 2019. This means they will take part in the National Finals which takes place in Birmingham over three days in early July.
Fast Trackers is an exciting nationwide programme that introduces students to engineering and is organised by Network Rail, in collaboration with Mott MacDonald, AimHigher West Midlands, Higher Horizons+ and other industry partners. The project launched in 2018 in response to the demand for engineering skills, due to increasing rail passenger numbers and the development of High Speed Two (HS2), while inspiring students on level three engineering courses to continue onto higher education.
Bee Narga-Martin, HE Outreach Advisor for South & City College said, “I am very impressed by our students' commitment, focus and determination to succeed, putting many hours of work in their own time. One of our students, Mark Bhagwandeen, also picked up an award for Best Presenter, he spoke with a natural confidence. They all presented very professionally and knowledgeably.”
Bee added, “This is such a valuable experience for our students that can be added to their CV or personal statement to get into university, in order to stand out from the crowd. It also gives them extra knowledge of the subject area and an opportunity to meet people who will support their career aspirations.”
Huge congratulations to all those involved and best of luck in the finals.
