If you feel confused about your future and need a change in career or are in search of some inspiration, look no further. Tony O’Hare is a tiling lecturer at South & City College Birmingham and has shed some light on why he chose tiling and why this college is the perfect place to study:

Tony O’Hare – tiling lecturer

I was in my 40s when I decided I wanted to retrain and change career. Prior to this point, I had various jobs from financial services to karate teaching, but I wanted something where I was self-employed and in charge of my working day. I had a lot of friends who were in construction and earning a good living. I came to this college as a student and picked a Wall and Floor Tiling course because I wanted a trade that was weather proof.

After I finished my qualifications, I set up my own tiling business and enjoyed being my own boss. At the same time, I was doing some part time teaching for the college at weekends. This turned into an offer of a full time teaching job in 2006 and I haven’t looked back since.

I love my job and I love making a difference to young people. Seeing them grow and develop their skills and knowing that I contributed to that is what makes me happy to do what I do every day. We teach valuable skills for employment, not only about the trade itself but other skills the students need for work, like time management, communication, maths and more. Hundreds of them leave us every year to go and pursue successful careers in tiling and hearing back from them when they’ve made success of their life fills me with pride every time.

As well as the tiling courses, I also teach on a multi-skills course in construction, so I get involved in painting and decorating, plumbing and carpentry. This course is great for students who are not sure about what they want to do yet, as it teaches them the basics of all trades and it acts like a springboard to a range of careers.

My message to anyone unsure about their future is to come to college. You will meet lots of new friends in a very supportive environment where tutors can guide you all the way. Who knows where that one small step through our college door could lead to? Towards your dream career, quite possibly.
