South and City College Birmingham was delighted to welcome James Cleverly, MP and Chairman of the Conservative Party last week. The purpose of the visit to the College’s Bordesley Green campus was to meet apprentices in their learning environment and see first-hand the work of leading further education colleges.
James Cleverly spoke to apprentices from National Express, one of the largest employers in the region and visited the new National Express Training Academy, which was officially opened by the Mayor of West Midlands last academic year. The Minister was also interested in hearing about the new light rail apprenticeship course with Midland Metro, the first of its kind in the country.
He also met apprentices studying Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, who were keen to share their insights and experience of apprenticeships with the Minister. South and City College is one of a few colleges nationwide offering this course.
The Minister was impressed with the College’s facilities, partnerships and the standards of students’ work. He said: ‘This a great example of a college working together with local and national employers to give young people the skills they need not only for the jobs today but also for the future.’
Sardul Dhesi, Deputy Principal of South and City College Birmingham added: ‘We have enjoyed showing James Cleverly around our well known technology centre at Bordesley Green. He’s been able to see how employers are embracing apprenticeships and how they have helped their businesses grow.’
