Students Online Surgery with The Politics Project

On 9 March, Gary Sambrook, MP for Northfield, delivered an online surgery for our A Level Politics students based at the Longbridge (Bournville College) campus.

The event was co-ordinated by politics tutor Anneliese Hatton and The Politics Project, the latter of which is a national programme aiming to transform the ways young people and politicians interact, giving students a chance to engage with their local politicians.

“It was obvious that the students had put a lot of work into the questions they asked. They already had lots of knowledge and the questions covered many areas. It was great to see them so engaged,” Gary told us after the event.

Students tasked Gary with a few actions to take back to the House of Commons. This included talking to the Education Secretary Gavin Williamson about exam results timing, discussing with the head of North Birmingham Academy about the use of facilities for older teenagers, and a possible trip to the House of Commons for the politics class later in the year, once restrictions allow.

“It was a real pleasure to host Gary virtually within a class,” said Anneliese. “The students asked a wide variety of questions and it was great to see them challenge him on some issues that were important to them. The students demonstrated how hard they have worked in terms of their knowledge about political issues, and I look forward to receiving updates from Gary so that the students will be able to feel that they are a valuable part of the political process.”

A Level student Roshni Quddus said of the event: “Interviewing Gary Sambrook was such an enlightening experience. We got to ask him why he voted in certain ways and learnt more about the ins and outs of his job as an MP. This will definitely be useful for my politics studies, not only for my wider knowledge but also for my essays.”

Roshni added: “He also told us his upcoming plans for Northfield and asked us what changes we want to see; this made us all feel important and heard. I now know how to contact MPs whenever I have concerns.”
