UAL Insights is the University’s outreach programme offering young people access to their Colleges for creative workshop activities and pre-university advice, including help with portfolio, applications and interview tips.

All South & City College fashion students aged 16-18 on Level 3 courses have been given the opportunity to apply for a place on the programme which has been set up to promote equality and diversity. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be guaranteed an interview at the London College of Fashion (LCF).

The successful candidates will participate in Spring, Summer and Autumn Schools. Participants are sent resources prior to the workshops starting and given access to online tutorials delivered by UAL tutors. During the week, the students will engage in peer and tutor critique daily, as well as being offered access to UAL ambassadors throughout the academic year.

The first workshop was held over the summer in July and the second will take place in October.

Antonelina Toncheva, Level 3 Styling student said “I found the summer workshop really interesting and it was a good opportunity to get to know a lot more about the fashion business course and how UAL works. Through the workshop, I was able to gather information on things like different research methods and apps to use to make my work more exciting. I am thankful for the opportunity that has been given as not many others have had the same opportunity!”

Nazia Sheikh, Fashion Lecturer said “We are privileged to participate in the Insights programme which is part of the prestigious University of Arts London.

“We have created links with London College of Fashion, this has given our 16-18 Fashion students the opportunity to liaise with like-minded students, participate in university-level workshops whilst developing their portfolios.”

A recent visit to the college by UAL saw Level 2 UAL Fashion students involved in a workshop called UAL 3D surface embellishment. Three students were keen to share their thoughts on the activities.

Tia Sinclair said, “I really enjoyed the practical parts of the workshop. We used spray paints on plastic and we got to be really creative.”

Amina Hansol added, “I loved being able to talk to the UAL Ambassador, as she was in the same position as us several years ago. I got a lot of questions answered.”

Iqra Hussain said, “Jacob, a lecturer from UAL was a brilliant presenter and gave us lots of new information about what career options are available to us.”
