Photography students at South & City College are documenting the regeneration of a street in the Jewellery Quarter. The project will see students photographing the changes taking place in different parts of the Quarter.
The college is working with Birmingham developers Cordia Blackswan, who are currently developing nine projects on Great Hampton Street.
The students’ work will then be showcased online by Birmingham Gems – a community website setting out to map all areas of interest across the city.
Students have also been allowed to use buildings currently being revamped by Cordia Blackswan as a performance space.
Emily Sewell 2nd year Level 3 Photography student described the experience, “It was good to learn about the history of Birmingham, as well as having the opportunity to take images for Cordia Blackswan. I think what the company do is great and cannot wait to see the new style of the Jewellery Quarter.”
Cheyenne Hall, another 2nd year Level 3 Photography student and a 2020 finalist for Young Travel Photographer of the Year added, “This project was a wonderful opportunity for us to take photos to be exhibited and seen by the public. The contrast of the new with the old building and the ideas for them were all exciting, and I am thankful to be a part of the process.”
Donna Drew, Head of School Creative Arts said, “The Great Hampton Street project has been an exciting and interesting way for photography and music students to come together. Their work will be showcased throughout the Great Hampton Street development and are continuing to work closely with a professional photographer from the project. It’s lovely to see how our creative students are making an impact on developments within the city. After a difficult 18 months, it’s nice to see the students being able to showcase their creative work outside of the classroom.”
