South & City College student gets work at Birmingham Women’s Hospital

18-year-old Emanuela Beghian from Small Heath is a current South & City College Birmingham Interior Design student and has previously completed Level 2 and 3 courses in Painting and Decorating at the college’s Bordesley Green campus.

At the start of 2022, Emanuela began work as a painter and decorator at Birmingham Women’s Hospital after successfully completing work experience with FESSA during the autumn of 2021. FESSA is a department of South & City College that undertakes medium to large scale construction projects which enable students to get real work experience in a live environment while working alongside experienced tradespeople. During the eight-week project, Emanuela and her sister Rahela worked on refurbishing the toilets at the Bordesley Green campus.

Tutor Tony O’Hare said, “Both Rahela and Emanuela had worked with FESSA on a few smaller projects earlier in 2021, so they had already developed a good understanding of how to work independently. They completed the painting and decorating works to a good standard and showed initiative when faced with some of the many problems that can pop up in a live job.”

Emanuela now attends college once a week to finish her Interior Design qualification and works four days a week at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. She has a great dedication to her new job and needs to be up early each day to catch two buses to get to work and be on time.

Emanuela’s future plans are still in development, however, after completing the Interior Design course, she is thinking of going to university to study business, to give her the knowledge to set up her interior design and decorating business.

We wish Emanuela much success and will follow her career with interest.
