Summer School Success

South & City College Summer School has been tremendous this year, especially for the creative and professional faculties. We caught up with some of the departments that have been involved this year to see what they’ve been up to.

The hairdressing, barbering, beauty and media makeup staff and students worked alongside the Commonwealth Games to assist in running the athlete’s salon! (No pun intended).

Not only that, but the lovely staff have also been providing one to one support for students, developing their skills and providing insight on the Barbering programmes South & City College offer. You can read more about what they got up to by clicking here.

We can’t forget about our fashion students who have also been hard at work on their project designs, learning to confidently engage in tasks to help build their portfolio of experimental artwork and textiles, in response to concept and research. This was also an opportunity for students to develop their skills in pattern cutting.

Over at our art & design department, students focused on Photoshop. They prepared and developed their chosen image for Silkscreen printing, using the Adobe Creative Suite to create a tie-dye shirt design.

Been following our talented music students? Then you’ll be pleased to know that they have had fun improving their creative song-writing skills and enhancing their professionalism through collaboration, communication and vocal ability. They learnt how to work towards a brief, both written and verbally, and then deliver an outcome!

Computing students proved their coding capabilities with sessions on C# programming, which is a language used to develop desktop and web applications. They learnt how to build a computer, which is phenomenal – and are now able to carry these vital skills forward into the workplace.

Our professional studies team on the other hand have been hard at work preparing our students for the working world. Students were supported with intense revision to help them progress into the next academic year, whilst the business team have been busy working on their plans for the enterprise scheme beginning in September. So far, they have purchased smoothie bikes and South and City College can’t wait to see the progress and continue to follow their journey.

Finally, our ESOL students took their time during the summer to further improve their written and verbal English, as well as helping to support the college at the Queen’s baton relay, held at Handsworth library. The event wouldn’t have been such a success without everyone, thank you.

South & City College Birmingham are so proud to see the students truly commit to their education by putting time aside during their summer holidays. Not only did they work to improve their skills and extend their learning, but also showed professionalism, dedication and passion towards their studies. The college are also thankful to have such amazing tutors who are devoted to supporting students in reaching their full potential.

The college look forward to holding its summer school next year and continuing to see the success stories that come from it throughout the next academic year.
