Earlier this year, we collaborated with GMI Construction Group to host their Construction Cares workshop at our Bordesley Green construction centre.
Part of GMI’s programme was a 3-day DIY workshop to support young care leavers into construction careers. We were thrilled to host the pilot, which was in partnership with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and BFriends charity, before it is run in Manchester, the North East and Leeds.
Ranj and Maiy, two of our visiting care leavers, came for 1-2-1 teaching in painting, plumbing, carpentry, tiling & plastering. College Technician David Livesey helped host and Nick Turner, Responsible Business Partner at GMI Construction Group, was there to supervise and award the certificates at the end of the workshop. There was also support staff from the children’s centre who got their hands dirty too!
Thanks to everyone involved for making this happen. This is a fantastic way for care leavers to develop practical skills & life experience. Any participants who express interest in a trade will be given the opportunity of work experience at a later date.
GMI’s Construction Cares programme started when the Construction Group became a signatory of the Care Leaver Covenant, a part of the government’s ‘keep on caring’ strategy to support people age 16-25 that are leaving care to become independent.
This means that extra support is in place for Care Leavers who wish to study with us.
