About the course

This Level 2 qualification is for you if you are looking to start a career in the barbering industry. There are separate classes for 16-18 year olds and for adults. You will work with local employers who will contribute to the knowledge and delivery of training - classes or lectures given by industry expert tutors in college We also benefit from our excellent partnerships with local and national barbering establishments. We urge students to participate in national competitions and events to improve skills and raise confidence.

This qualification covers all the core skills you will need to progress to further learning and training, or to enter the world of work within the barbering industry. You'll cover topics such as cutting men's hair, grooming facial hair, styling men's hair, hair industry practices, adhering to salon health and safety guidelines, client consultation for hair services, and hair and scalp shampooing and conditioning.

What are the entry requirements?

GCSE grade 2/E or above in English language* Entry Level 3 or above in Functional skills English* * If you do not have evidence of a recognised English qualification you will undertake an Initial Assessment at the start of your course to support you appropriately.

Where can I progress next?

On successful completion of the course, you can progress into employment, onto an Apprenticeship, or further study by taking qualifications at Level 3.



Is this course free?

At South & City College Birmingham, we offer a wide range of courses for most age groups.

School Leavers: For learners who are between the ages of 16 to 18, studies will be free.

Adults: For learners who are aged 19 or over, the cost of study will depend on the course or programme that you choose. Some courses may even be free*. If the course is not free, students aged 19 at the start of their programme who wish to study need to either pay their course fees, or take out an Advanced Learning Loan.

*Eligibility criteria applies. There may be an exception for students aged 19 or over that are taking their first full Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to A Levels and Access to HE Diplomas), who could be supported by the Learner Support Fund, or free adult course funded by the WMCA.
